Every year the VFW awards thousands of dollars in prizes, awards and scholarships to students across the nation who participate in our Patriot Pen Written Essay Contest at the Middle School level and the Voice of Democracy Taped Audio Essay Contest at the High School Level. These contests begin at the Post (community) level and advance through District and State to National, where a $10,000 scholarship is awarded each year to the winner of each category. |

At our business meeting of District 8 officers and members held at Fairhope on Sunday, February 1, 2026, last year's District 8 winners, Kaden T.D. Brooks (VOD), sponsored by Saraland Post, and Bailee Faulk (PP), sponsored by Elberta Post, honored District attendees by reading their winning essays. Their essays will now be advanced to State and National levels for further consideration. |
